The 1st ACM International Workshop on The Future of Work, Workplaces, and Smart Buildings (FoWSB) 2022

The objective of the first ACM International Workshop on the Future of Work, Workplaces, and Smart Buildings (FoWSB) is to bring together researchers and industry practitioners from data science, system sciences, building and urban sciences. The workshop will discuss the role of smart buildings, communities and cities in shaping the future of our work and workplaces. Join us - submit a paper and share your ideas!

Join us in Boston Massachusetts in November 2022 for an incredible discussion with thought-leaders from around the world - Let’s crack the future of work together!

About the Workshop

Welcome to ACM FoWSB 2022

In the last decades, the building or AEC industry has prioritized ‘sustainability’ within the built-environment and cities. However, the pandemic has challenged the design-thinking within the industry. It forced reimagining the future of the work and workplaces in many ways. In particular, the emerging paradigm shift in smart buildings, communities, and cities is transforming the integrated design-thinking approach (e.g. 15-min city) and further accelerated the adoption and application of digital technologies (e.g. thermal imaging/CCTV plus computer vision to assure social-distancing) demonstrating several new value propositions. This includes safety assurance, business continuity, organizational resiliency, advance sustainability, improved occupant health and building performance overall.

The central theme of the workshop is to delineate new value propositions, challenges, barriers, innovative approaches, and emerging opportunities at the nexus of digitizing work, workplace transformation, and particular role of smart buildings (mainly during and post-covid). Some of the sub-themes of FoWSB includes (but not limited to) for instance, business continuity, resiliency, future-proofing, health, wellness, human performance, safety and security beyond energy efficiency and sustainability. In addition, any valuable lessons learnt from innovative field implementations of smart systems and solutions (during covid) within the built-environment.

The first ACM international workshop on the Future of Work, Workplaces, and Smart Buildings (FoWSB) aims to bring together researchers and industry practitioners from data science, system sciences, building and urban sciences with particular interest to discuss the roleplay of smart buildings, communities, and cities in shaping the future of our work and workplaces. The objective is to translate deeper scientific insights into practice, and in turn mature the smart building marketplace in a fair and responsible way.

The workshop shall be structured thematically and organized to facilitate interaction and forge new collaborations among the participants from academia, industry and policy making on this important paradigm shift in the industry. The workshop will host invited keynote talks, selected research paper presentations, and panel discussion (details on program agenda will be announced soon).

Important Dates

In order to be considered for the workshop, please check the call-for-papers and submission guidelines here and hurry to submit your thought-leading research articles.

  • In order to be considered for the workshop on the future of work, please join the call for papers and submit your thought leading ideas.

  • Our technical program committee will notify all authors of their submission status. These statuses will be either

    • Accepted

    • Accepted With Revisions

    • Rejected

Accepted with revisions will be given a weeks time to re submit

  • Final papers should be submitted.

“Camera-ready” copy refers to the final stage of text, tables, and illustrations of a manuscript and includes proper formatting. What is submitted as camera ready is printed as it is with no revisions.

  • We will sit together for a half day (hybrid) workshop where we will discuss the fascinating topic of the future of work, the impact of digitalization in workplaces, and the challenges we face in realising Smart Buildings, and Communities

Why FoWSB 2022?

With this workshop we aim to create new collaborations between the participants and together build an ecosystem that not only provide access to partners (building owners, facility managers, prop tech agencies) but also innovate new pathways to reimagine the future of our work/workplaces; ideate and co-develop new mechanisms (funding, mentoring, data/knowledge sharing, certification) to guide the smart buildings industry globally.

Let’s crack the future of work and workplaces together!
